Amid the rising tide of hate speech and extremism in Syria, the Free Media Union has initiated a signature collection campaign aimed at reinforcing the commitment of media professionals to uphold professional and ethical standards. This initiative stems from the media’s responsibility to disseminate truth and foster a culture of dialogue and coexistence.

The campaign was launched on July 22 and will run for 15 days, during which media workers from various regions of North and East Syria will be invited to sign a professional code of honor. This charter rejects the use of media platforms for incitement or spreading hatred and emphasizes the crucial role of the media in defending democratic values and peace.

This campaign comes at a time when the need for responsible journalism that reflects the diversity of Syrian society and preserves its social and political fabric is more urgent than ever. The union plans to announce the campaign’s outcomes and future plans following the conclusion of the signature period, as part of ongoing efforts to combat hate speech and promote an ethical media environment, according to Avin Ibrahim, co-chair of the Free Media Union.

Ibrahim added: “Recent events in Sweida, the coastal regions, and other areas confirm the growing use of media for incitement and disrespecting sacred values under the guise of freedom of expression. This is unacceptable. Media freedom does not justify hatred; rather, it should be a tool to enhance societal and human values.”

She also noted that the union closely monitors the media landscape through its human rights monitoring and violations follow-up committees, which document all breaches whether committed by media professionals or against them. There has been a marked increase in media rhetoric promoting hatred, which contradicts the essence of journalism based on transparency and equality.

Furthermore, Ibrahim explained that the union maintains ongoing communication with several human rights and international organizations, including the International Federation of Arab Journalists, media unions in the Middle East, and the Committee to Protect Journalists, aiming to unify efforts against hate speech.

She concluded her statement saying: “The society of North and East Syria is founded on the principles of justice, equality, and respect for sacred values. From this perspective, we reject all media discourse that sows discord and division. We call on all media professionals to commit to language of dialogue and tolerance, under the slogan of our campaign: ‘Together, We Reject Hate Speech and Media Incitement.’ We hope to be among the pioneers in fostering responsible media that serves civil peace in the country.”
