Visitors and residents of Damascus noticed a fire at the Umayyad Mosque late on Sunday night.

According to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), the fire was caused by an electrical short circuit in one of the old electrical installations, which ignited a light fixture near one of the mosque's entrances, resulting in a limited fire.

Civil defense teams quickly responded to the scene and brought the fire under control within a short time, preventing the flames from spreading to other parts of the mosque. No casualties or material damage were recorded.

Mahmoud Zidan, director of the Umayyad Mosque, said the fire resulted from a short circuit in one of the old electrical installations, noting that the rapid response of civil defense teams helped contain the fire and prevent it from spreading throughout the historic landmark.

He added that the mosque continues to receive worshippers and visitors as usual, noting that a review of the mosque's electrical wiring has begun and that the necessary measures are being taken to prevent similar incidents from recurring in the future.
