Fawza Youssef: Leader Noureddine Sofi was symbol of sincere friendship with women

The Media Center of the People's Defense Forces announced on August 11 the martyrdom of Noureddine Sofi, commander of the freedom revolution in Rojava and the people of North and East Syria, on April 6, 2021, during a visit to Mount Gari in Southern Kurdistan.

In this context, Fawza Youssef, member of the Presidency Body of the Democratic Union Party (PYD), commented on news of his martyrdom, offering her condolences to his family, the Kurdish people, and all the people of the region. She indicated that his martyrdom is a big loss for a dear, precious, and valuable individual who sacrificed his life for the freedom and cause of his people.

A vanguard role in the Rojava Revolution

Fawza Yousef praised the career and struggle of leader Nureddin Sofi, saying, "He has a long history in the history of the Kurdistan Revolution and played a prominent and pioneering role in the Rojava Revolution, struggling in multiple arenas: military, social, and organizational."

Regarding his leadership, Fawza explained that Sofi was a true revolutionary in spirit and left his clear imprint on the struggle. His most prominent characteristics were his devotion to his people and his loyalty to his comrades, as Leader Abdullah Ocalan explained: "A sincere comrade to his friends, a contemporary leader, humble, bold, and combining words with action."

She went on to say that Comrade Nureddin Sofi was a self-developing individual who never tired. He was a thinker and a role model, highly experienced in mountain warfare in the guerrilla army, and always strove to be at the front rank of those who organized and developed his people.

Loved by all the people of the region

Fawza emphasized that Sofi was a revolutionary for the democratic country project, a lover of all people in a true sense. All people witnessed his proximity and affection for the North and East Syrian people. He did not differentiate between one people and another people or ethnic group, and he did not fight for one people exclusively. Rather, he was a revolutionary who labored for the entire humanity, and that is the reason he achieved the respect and confidence of Arabs, Kurds, and all other humans.

Fawza said Sufi's life was a combination of military engagement and leadership in community organizing. She said, "He fought in numerous locations, and in addition to being a military commander, he was also a pioneer in organizing his people."

Founder of the autonomous administration and the People's Protection Units

Fawza recalled that in 2013, when the Rojava Revolution erupted, he undertook the attempt to organize the people and played a major role in the establishment of the Movement for a Democratic Society (TEV-DEM) and the Autonomous Administration. He was also a pioneer in forging and strengthening the People's Protection Units (YPG), a force he envisioned protecting civilians from attacks, in addition to his contribution to the formation of protection institutions.

She said, "He was brave and decisive in taking decisions to rescue our people from massacres and secure their existence, and he never hesitated to demonstrate the necessary courage."

Fawza also spoke about his role in organizing society, saying, "Comrade Sofi played a big role in establishing the communes in 2013, the first experience in organizing institutional issues and making the area an entity with a political will. He worked a lot on organizing youth and all segments of society."

A true friend of women

Martyr Nourredine Sofi was a true friend to women, one of the most prominent revolutionary qualities Fawza Yousef encountered in him. She said, "He was a true friend of women, avoiding traditional, exclusionary attitudes toward them. Throughout our struggle, I witnessed his serious interest in the women's freedom movement and his great respect for their will to struggle. He was a true supporter of women's empowerment in the arena of struggle, imbued with the spirit of justice, equality, and socialism."

A symbol of humility, unfazed by adversities

His humility was a part of his personality, so much so that he became a symbol of morality and transcendence. Fawza depicts him as "a symbol of humility, not fearing hardships, having a piercing insight in analyzing phenomena and deducing lessons from them, courageous in criticism and self-criticism, a developer of the revolution, and having visions and methods for its triumph."

International relations that go beyond borders

Leader Nourredine Sofi's social relationships did not end with the local society, but extended beyond it to include fighters who were from outside. Fawza explains that he was a very internationalist in his dimension since he was dealing with Turkish and foreign fighters coming from the West, attempting to understand them and to address them in their language and with their feelings, exerting huge effort and endeavor.

A sharp intelligence and the ability to develop tactics

Comrade Sofi was distinguished by his sharp mind and his exceptional ability to read situations. Fawza explains, "He had a sharp intelligence and excelled at developing war tactics and finding solutions to problems, astonishing in the depth of his analysis of events." He took part in the Kurdistan National Revolution and in great arenas such as Amed, Zagros, and Rojava and was a pioneer in these fields, not weighed down by obstacles and not afraid of difficulties.

The interest of the people before all else

She explained that the martyr Sofi never put personal interests first, but put the cause of his people before all else. He always thought as a group, away from individualism, with the social thinking that distinguishes pioneers.

Fawza Yousef considered the martyrdom of leader Noureddine Sofi a tremendous loss for the Kurdish people and the people of the Democratic Nation, who lost one of their most noble and beloved sons. He left behind a legacy and principles of struggle on which one can build and expand, and a history that will remain to inspire. She went on, "He was a lover of life, active and dynamic, and never knew repose. We will adopt these traits as the pillars of our lifestyle and our personalities." His courage and daring are a beacon of struggle.

Fawza Yousef summed up by saying, "His friendship will be a bridge through which we can cross to the victory of the Democratic Nation project, and his courage and boldness will be a light on the path of our struggle. We promise him to move forward until victory."
