European Human Rights delegation arrives in Rojava to investigate violations

On February 22, 2026, a group of legal professionals and human rights organization members from European countries entered Rojava.

The delegation, which arrived through the External Relations Department of the Autonomous Administration, will visit legal and human rights institutions regarding violations occurring in Syria and will subsequently prepare a report. The group held a meeting with the Social Justice Council in Jazira.

One of the delegation members, former Icelandic Minister of Justice Ögmundur Jónasson, spoke to ANHA agency about the purpose of their visit.

Jónasson explained that they aim to observe and investigate the events and violations that have taken place in Rojava and the region. He added: “Our group includes many experts in medical and legal fields. The violations occurring in Rojava drew my attention. It is important for me to see the conditions the people are living under. Fundamentally, we have come for humanitarian work. We will now conduct a study, investigate, and see things firsthand.”

He noted that they will hold meetings with public figures, eyewitnesses, and institutions. He said: “We have already held a meeting and listened to justice institutions, obtaining legal information. Through the meeting, we better understood the contradictions practiced by the interim government in Damascus toward the region. On the one hand, there is talk of integration; on the other hand, there are deep difficulties in the justice sector. We speak of integration while the siege of Kobani continues. We have come to gather information.”

Jónasson stated that at the conclusion of their meetings and investigations, they will prepare a report to share with the public and submit it to relevant institutions and authorities.
