In early March, the Energy Body in Tabqa, with support from the Energy Authority of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria, launched a project to rehabilitate the Jarniyah electrical substation, which was rendered inoperative following assaults by the Turkish occupation forces.

On January 3rd and 4th, Turkish drone strikes targeted Jarniyah in the countryside of Tabqa, causing near-total destruction of the city’s main electrical station. The attacks resulted in a complete outage of electricity and water for the city and 196 surrounding villages. The bombardment also inflicted extensive damage on the electrical grid and public service machinery, further deepening the suffering of the local population.

In response, the Energy Body implemented an emergency plan to supply partial power to the substation by laying an alternative power line originating from Jaabar town, passing through Mahmoudli and the village of Al-Hurriya. This measure aimed to preserve the station’s internal equipment and secure water access for residents.

The Turkish forces launched another strike on the same station on January 9th, disrupting emergency response efforts. Nevertheless, the Body managed to conduct urgent repairs to restore drinking water supply to the population.

In a statement to ANHA agency, Majid Al-Abdo, the Co-Chair of the Energy Authority in Tabqa, said “The damage to the substation is estimated at approximately 80%, with losses amounting to around $1.5 million USD. The destruction affected control panels, 66 kV circuit breakers, 66 kV voltage transformers, and the main 10 MW transformer, which was completely disabled, in addition to structural damage to the facility.”

“We commenced the full-scale rehabilitation process in early March, addressing both technical and structural aspects of the facility,” al-Abdo added.

Al-Abdo noted that the restoration effort involves a joint technical team comprising specialized units from the Dam Administration, the Energy Authority of North and East Syria, the Tabqa  Energy Body, and workers from Jarniyah town. The collaboration is intended to accelerate the pace of the project and ensure high-quality execution.

He explained that the rehabilitation plan is divided into several sectors: laboratory systems, command and control, power systems, and civil construction.

Al-Abdo emphasized the strategic importance of the substation, describing it as a vital artery for supplying electricity and water to Jarniyah and its 196 affiliated villages. He confirmed that operations are expected to resume within ten days.
