Egyptian researcher: Nationalism fuels conflicts, solution lies in democratic nation

The war in Gaza has increased tensions in the region in general, amid expectations that several files and issues in the region will be affected, especially the Syrian file, given the shared borders between Israel and Syria as well as the presence of regional actors involved in the two files.

Regarding the effects of Israel’s war with Hamas, the Egyptian doctor and researcher in political science, Taha Ahmed, considered that there are clear repercussions of the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas on the path of the political solution in Syria, because the Syrian crisis has been linked, since its beginning, to regional interactions and interactions between many regional and international powers who have interests in prolonging the Syrian crisis, pointing out that countries such as the United States, Russia, Turkey and Iran, as well as Gulf countries such as Saudi Arabia and the UAE, played roles all along, contributing to the complexity of the crisis, and as a result of the influence struggle between these countries, Syria turned into a tool for settling scores between them.

He added that the current main actors involved in the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas are the same ones involved in the Syrian crisis, such as Iran and the United States, and therefore we have seen that Iran has begun to move its arms in the region. Therefore, striking Hamas is a strike against Iran, and therefore striking Iran in the region is a strike against Syria, which is part of from Iran's axis in the region.

The researcher in political science also pointed out that regional issues, such as the Syrian crisis, are linked to interactions between major powers, and what is happening in Gaza currently is an extension of the conflict existing in the Middle East, and perhaps the current dynamics, such as strengthening the American military presence in the Mediterranean and the Red Sea, are not only for Israel’s security. Rather, to maintain Western influence in the Middle East.

Taha Ahmed pointed out that the path of the political solution in Syria has become linked to what is happening in Israel, and that there will be more complexity and closing the doors of hope in the prospects for a political solution in Syria, because the current intense round of conflict between the United States and the West on the one hand and Iran on the other hand will... Punitive for the latter, and therefore Tehran will strengthen the Syrian card vis-à-vis the West, and the horizon of a solution in the foreseeable future in Syria is distant. The researcher believed that the matter would be very complicated in the Syrian issue, given its connection to the main actors targeted in the ongoing war in Palestine, which is taking place between the West on the one hand, and the Iranian axis on the other hand.

As for proposing the idea of a democratic nation to solve the Palestinian issue, Ahmed considers that this idea is based on coexistence and the creation of entities that support each other through a democratic approach based on brotherhood between different, ethnically and religiously diverse peoples.

He explained that this proposal is a good proposal for resolving regional issues that are taking place between various parties, but the idea of the values on which the solution of a democratic nation is based must be based on democratic values that are based on the idea of accepting the other and coexistence among all, but with regard to the Palestinian issue, is the idea Is coexistence between Arabs in Palestine and Jews in Israel possible? Taha Ahmed ruled this out.

The researcher in political science explained that Hamas, which is part of the axis of resistance, adopts its ideology, which is that it has an ideological vision that all lands are Arab lands and does not believe that Israel has a right to anything. On the other hand, in Israel they do not accept the other party at all, and they consider all lands are Jewish lands. What is currently in control in Israel is an extreme right-wing movement that believes that Israel must occupy all of this land, because it is Israeli land, and the other party does not accept it.

Taha Ahmed saw that the two parties (Israel and Hamas) lack the ability to coexist, and each party does not accept the other, which is the main condition for implementing the idea of a democratic nation.

Political science researcher Taha Ahmed confirmed that the problem does not lie in the democratic nation, but rather in the conflicting parties on the ground.
