The displaced people in the Tal Abyad / Girê Spî displacement camp in the Euphrates region continue to express their aspirations to return to their homes, which have been occupied for more than five years (since 2019), amid the absence of any tangible executive measures from the transitional government in Syria to guarantee a safe return that would end years of displacement and hardship.

Noura al-Sharida, a displaced woman from the village of Shirkarak, said she had hoped to see actual movement leading to the return to her village after being exhausted by life in the camps, enduring the summer heat, winter cold, and harsh living conditions. She added, “We are still waiting, but nothing has changed on the ground, as if our cause has become just a media topic.”

On his part, the displaced man Mustafa Mohammed Hasso expressed his surprise at the continued occupation of his city, Girê Spî, while displaced people from other areas such as Hama, Aleppo, Damascus, and Daraa have returned to their homes. He said, “We hear about our city but do not see it. Even our dead are buried far from their land. We want real steps from the transitional government in Syria to ensure the exit of the occupiers and our safe return.”

As for the displaced woman Khawla Al-Ibrahim, she affirmed that returning to the villages is impossible as long as occupiers and mercenaries remain, considering that delays in taking practical measures deprive them of their right to return. She called for accelerating the implementation of decisions guaranteeing the removal of occupiers and the provision of a safe environment for return.
