Department of Foreign Relations demands clarification from Damascus on Afrin arrests

The Department of Foreign Relations in the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria has emphasized the necessity of an official clarification from the Damascus authority regarding the widespread arrests of Afrin residents after they entered and then left the city.

A few days ago, a convoy of Public Security Forces affiliated with the Damascus authorities entered Afrin. After a show of force, the convoy left the city. This was followed by a wave of arrests targeting Afrin residents.

Kamal Akif, the official spokesperson for the Department of Foreign Relations in the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria, called on the Damascus government to explain the reasons behind the arrests of Afrin residents. In a statement, he said:

"A few days ago, we witnessed the entry of a convoy of Public Security Forces from Aleppo into Afrin, and then they withdrew without any explanation. Following this, the city experienced widespread arrests of those who had come out to welcome the Public Security personnel. These developments raise suspicions and concerns, further exacerbating the suffering of our people under occupation. It is crucial for Damascus to provide an official clarification regarding this incident, while ensuring that the return of Afrin residents to their areas remains a top priority in efforts there."
