DAA visits Christians to celebrate Christmas in Jazira Canton

This morning, a delegation from the DAA, consisting of members of religious, political, and security institutions, visited the Christians of Jazira to congratulate them on Christmas.

The delegation was headed by the co-chair of the Executive Council of the DAA, Aven Sweid, and the co-chair of the Foreign Relations Department, Ilham Ahmed, along with representatives from the Interior Committee, Women’s Committee, Council of Notables, and the Martyrs’ Families Council.

The delegation visited the Syriac National Council at St. Jacob Church in Qamishlo, the office of the Syriac Union Party, and the headquarters of the Internal Security Forces (Sutoro).

During the visit to the Syriac National Council, Ilham Ahmed congratulated the Christian community on Christmas, saying:

"We share a common history, we have lived through hardships and joys together, and we have suffered much together."

She referred to the March 10 agreement, stating:

"We hope there will be steps before the New Year holidays. We signed the March 10 agreement and made great and intensive efforts to implement it. We faced significant challenges, especially external interference that prevented reaching understanding and results, as well as internal challenges, since the culture instilled by the previous regime remains a major obstacle to reaching agreements and understandings in Syria."

Ahmed noted that with the lifting of sanctions and the start of new understandings with Damascus, the situation will improve, and significant changes will occur. She explained that the focus is currently on integrating military forces and that there is some alignment of ideas with Damascus, with only minor details left to finalize a new agreement. She added: "We hope this will happen before the New Year, as a good news for the population."

Ilham Ahmed emphasized that Syria needs a new constitution, stating: "Without a new constitution, it is difficult to have stability, security, and trust, because we have suffered under the old constitution and the policies of the previous regime."

She further explained: "We are currently in the stage of rebuilding Syria. Rebuilding Syria requires participation, including all Syrians in the process. No single party should sit and decide alone. All of us have made sacrifices; the people of the region have paid thousands of martyrs, as well as the people of Sweida and other areas. Everyone who sacrificed has the right to see a new Syria that is unlike the old one, which was dominated by a strict central regime that excluded others."

Ahmed also emphasized the need for socialism in Syria, saying: "If they want to build a new Syria, they should consider this experience, and practical steps should be taken after the New Year."

Political and security officials from the Syriac community stated that the unity of the people in the region is the basis of civil peace and expressed hope that a new constitution will guarantee the rights of all citizens, especially recognizing Syriac-Assyrian rights. They said:

"We have our history, traditions, and heritage, and we love our language. We hope for a constitution that fulfills these demands through understanding and peace."
