Continuous efforts to address environmental challenges in al-Raqqa canton

In light of the increasing environmental challenges facing Raqqa canton, the Raqqa Environment Authority is working to implement a series of ambitious projects and programs aimed at protecting natural resources and improving the quality of life for residents.

In this regard, Aref Muslim, the co-chair of the Raqqa canton Environment Authority, stated that the authority is currently focusing on several key environmental axes, most notably recycling rubbish by developing effective methods for collection and selecting the most appropriate locations for its collection and disposal.

The authority also pays great attention to combating desertification and water scarcity, due to the drought affecting the region and the lack of water from the Euphrates River. These are two major environmental challenges threatening the region.

He pointed out that the authority is working to study and implement solutions to adapt to these phenomena, such as promoting drought-resistant crops and improving water use efficiency.

The co-chair of the Environment Authority in Raqqa canton revealed to ANHA agency the imminent establishment of a specialized laboratory to monitor water and soil quality in the region.

He explained, "This laboratory will play a vital role in collecting accurate data on pollution levels and identifying its sources, which will enable the authority to make informed decisions and develop effective strategies to protect these resources."

He emphasized that "the laboratory will analyze regular water samples from various sources, including drinking and irrigation water, as well as soil samples to assess their health and the impact of pollutants."

He added, "The authority faces challenges related to the lack of environmental awareness among some segments of society, in addition to the lack of resources necessary to implement major projects. However, the authority affirms its commitment to addressing these challenges through cooperation with relevant parties."

Awareness Programs and Community Partnerships

Muslim explained that the Authority recognizes the important role of the local community in achieving its environmental goals. Therefore, it plans to launch and intensify ongoing environmental awareness programs targeting various segments of society, with the aim of raising awareness of the importance of environmental conservation and how to contribute to reducing pollution and rationalizing resource consumption.

Message and Call to Action

Arif Muslim, the co-chair of the Environment Authority in Raqqa, delivered a key message to the local community: "Environmental protection is everyone's responsibility."

He called on citizens in Raqqa canton to actively contribute to environmental protection efforts through simple and effective practices, such as separating waste at the source, rationalizing water consumption in homes and agriculture, participating in cleaning and afforestation initiatives organized by the Authority or other entities, and spreading environmental awareness among friends and family.

Ambitious Future Plans

The Authority's short- and medium-term future plans include developing reforestation projects in areas affected by desertification, adopting modern wastewater treatment technologies for irrigation, and drilling artesian wells.
