The decline in the value of the Syrian pound against the dollar, which reached about 13,000 pounds, and the rise in diesel prices to 75 cents, have directly impacted the living conditions. This is happening at a time when the labor market is experiencing a continuous recession and a lack of job opportunities, which exacerbates the difficulty of securing basic needs for a wide segment of the population, especially workers and those with limited income.

Unprecedented price increases

In this context, Mustafa al-Mohammed, who supports a family of five and works in the labor market in al-Hasakah city, said that their situation is extremely tragic due to the lack of job opportunities and unprecedented price increases.

He added, "For ten days, I haven't gotten any work, and I haven't earned a single Syrian pound. The rise in prices affects us greatly and increases our daily suffering."

He continued, saying: "We return to our homes empty-handed, because the rise in the dollar's price has greatly affected the living conditions. When the exchange rate was 17,000 SP, prices were not this high. Despite the exchange rate dropping to around 13,000 Syrian pounds, prices remain significantly elevated."

He called for the necessity of imposing market regulations and enabling citizens to secure their basic needs, affirming that the living conditions can no longer be tolerated.

Demands to regulate the markets

For his part, the worker Khalaf al-Ubaid said that living conditions have worsened significantly, and there are no job opportunities available, while the rise in the dollar's price has increased the level of suffering, in addition to the impact of rising diesel prices, amidst the continued lack of job opportunities.

He added that what is needed is to regulate the markets and unify prices among commercial stores, and work on reducing them, because the living conditions have become extremely difficult and cannot be sustained under the current circumstances.

Lack of job opportunities

In the same context, worker Hamid Abdel Ghani said that they are suffering greatly from the rise in prices and the exchange rate of the dollar, in addition to the price differences between commercial stores, amid the lack of job opportunities, and that the current living conditions are not normal.

He added that the rise in the dollar has directly affected their daily lives, along with the lack of price uniformity in the markets. He affirmed that their main demand is to live with dignity and to provide the minimum necessities of life.

Efforts to organize workers and provide job opportunities in al-Hasakah

Our correspondent conveyed the workers' complaints to the Union of Toilers in the city of Al-Hasakah, where the co-chairman of the union, Kamal Ali, explained that the itinerant workers do not have stable jobs and rely on freelance work within the city.

He added that the union has coordinated in the past period with the People's Municipality, with the aim of creating a designated place to organize their work, thru special committees that will organize and distribute the workers to available jobs, ensuring their rights and improving their living conditions.

Ali confirmed that the union works during the agricultural season to secure job opportunities for migrant workers by coordinating with them and forming work teams directed to the required locations.

He added that coordination is also being made with the Contractors Union in al-Hasakah to collaborate with contractors, aiming to provide job opportunities for these workers, ensuring their rights and reducing unemployment among them.
