Co-Chair of KNK: call paved the way for dialogue toward unity

Ahmad Karamos, the Co-Chair of the Kurdistan National Congress, spoke to ANHA agency about leader Abdullah Ocalan's call for Kurdish unity, the importance of Kurdish unity in the Middle East, the efforts towards this unity, and the obstacles hindering it.

Karamos explained that leader Abdullah Ocalan has always exerted great efforts and insisted on Kurdish national unity, continuing, "The Kurdistan National Congress was founded through the efforts and insistence of Mr. Abdullah Ocalan, and now, a strategic path has begun not only in Northern Kurdistan (Bakur Kurdistan) but across all of Kurdistan."

"Ocalan’s call paved the way for dialogue"

Ahmad Karamos highlighted the significance of Abdullah Ocalan's call for Kurdish unity, saying, "This is a very important call, especially in light of the changes occurring in the Middle East, and in the context of dialogue between the Kurdish liberation movement and the Turkish state. In this process, Mr. Abdullah Ocalan has placed special emphasis on Kurdish unity, and the people of Kurdistan must immediately consolidate their unity across all four parts and make it the top priority."

Karamos described the impact of Ocalan's call on the Kurds and the international scene, stating: "The call has stirred great enthusiasm among the people of Kurdistan and their friends, creating a huge sense of hope and paving the way for dialogue. The ground for dialogue is now much stronger than before, and everyone is dealing with the issue seriously. It has also created great hope among the friends of the Kurds."

Karamos reminded the Kurds about the changes unfolding in the Middle East, addressing them by saying: "This change began in the Middle East in the 1990s after the collapse of the Ba'ath regime in Iraq, the current Assad regime, the weakening of Iran, and the threat from Turkey. We have reached the stage of solving the Kurdish issue. Of course, all regional and global powers are pursuing their own interests, but the Kurds face a historic opportunity, and they must not miss this opportunity that has come after a century. No one should act according to their own interests. Everyone must unite and choose unity, solidarity, and a common strategy."

On April 26, 2025, a Kurdish conference was held in Rojava Kurdistan, with participation from all Kurdish parties and organizations from the four parts.
Karamos evaluated the conference by saying, "We witnessed the first step in Rojava Kurdistan, and we consider this step blessed. Similar steps must be taken in other parts of Kurdistan; otherwise, the Kurds will lose a historic opportunity."

Karamos spoke about the efforts of the Kurdistan National Congress (KNK) for the national unity of the Kurdish people, saying: "There is ground for this initiative, a strong and broad initiative in this regard in Northern Kurdistan (Bakur). There was also a large meeting held in Eastern Kurdistan (Rojhilat) on April 26 and 27, which included efforts and demands to create a foundation for unity. Every member of the Kurdistan National Congress is working to exchange ideas with forces, parties, organizations, and personalities in Rojhilat. It is clear that Rojhilat will witness significant changes, and therefore, there is a dire need for Kurdish unity."

"Southern Kurdistan is not fulfilling its responsibilities despite available opportunities"

Ahmad Karamos spoke sadly about Southern Kurdistan, saying: "There is weakness, as they are not fulfilling their historical duties and responsibilities despite the available opportunities. Take the 2024 elections as an example, where the parliament only met once, but there is no real role for the parliament. A new government should have been formed, but it wasn’t. In conflict areas like Kirkuk, there is no communication with the central government based on Article 140, and no steps are being taken regarding the issue of unifying and integrating the Peshmerga. The failure in these matters weakens the regional government vis-à-vis the Iraqi government. Southern Kurdistan can play an important role in national unity."

"The enemy fears Kurdish unity"

Karamos pointed out the obstacles to Kurdish national unity, saying: "When we understand the strategic importance of unity, our enemy understands it too. What the enemy fears is Kurdish unity. This is the main obstacle. Both the Turkish state, Iran, Iraq, and the Islamic and jihadist powers in Syria are doing their utmost to prevent unity. Additionally, we are not fully aware of the necessity of unity. Often, differences in ideas and ideologies have led to the failure of achieving unity. The enemy has implanted this notion into the minds of the Kurds. There are also some obstacles at the international level, as some countries continue to defend the Treaty of Lausanne for their own interests.
