Clashes renew with medium, heavy weapons in Sweida countryside

A short while ago, fresh clashes erupted in the Sweida countryside, after the Syrian Transitional Government Forces targeted Telal al-Hadid area west of the city with medium weapons and drones.

ANHA correspondents reported that the targeting turned into clashes after the Druze National Guard Forces in Sweida began responding to the sources of fire.

Since last night until the early hours of this morning, the Sweida countryside witnessed clashes involving heavy weapons, amid a continued security alert in the area vicinity.

A statement issued by the National Guard Command confirmed that the Transitional Government Forces stationed around Rima Hazem – al-Mazraa, launched heavy fire using 23mm machine guns towards the town of al-Majdal, targeting civilians.

The statement added that the National Guard Units "dealt immediately and decisively with the sources of fire, and implemented an appropriate response that led to silencing them," stressing that their forces "will continue their defensive missions with full readiness and will respond firmly to any new breach of the truce."

Eyewitnesses reported that the clashes continued intermittently until the early morning hours, amid security tensions in the region.

Since last July, Sweida and its countryside have witnessed a series of violations of the ceasefire agreement held between the two sides, following a military escalation that resulted in the deaths of more than 2,000 people.
