Clashes erupt on Aleppo airport road as Ahmad al-Sharaa visits

The vicinity of Aleppo International Airport road witnessed violent clashes on Tuesday between the Damascus Authority's “General Security” and groups described as “unknown”, coinciding with Ahmad al-Sharaa's visit to Aleppo Castle to participate in an event.

Sources told ANHA agency that these groups are part of the so-called “factions,” which have not announced that they will disband or join the Damascus-affiliated Ministry of Defense, despite a May 17 deadline set by the ministry, which gave 10 days for unaffiliated groups to join the ministry.

The deadline expired on Tuesday, May 27, without any official response from any party, while the Damascus authority did not issue any statement regarding the clashes that erupted.

The incident comes amid escalating security tensions in the city, especially after a series of security incidents in Syria in general, and Aleppo in particular, in recent weeks.

On May 17, Al-Jazmati neighborhood in Aleppo witnessed clashes at two different points, one inside the neighborhood itself and the other on the airport road, between the General Security and other groups including former members of Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham and multiple nationalities.
