The city of al-Nabk in the Qalamoun region of Rural Damascus has been witnessing increasing tension following a series of events that began after a sit-in held by local youths demanding the release of several detainees, one of whom was later released, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The Observatory reported that "the General Security in al-Nabk closed down a rest stop and a car showroom belonging to a well-known businessman in the area, after arresting a person who had filed a complaint against a group of young men. The case later escalated when the complainant was accused of opening fire on the government complex."

Information indicated that two individuals were involved in fabricating charges against the accused young man in order to extort the businessman and obtain large sums of money, according to testimonies from within the city.

In light of these developments, clashes broke out between members of the “General Security” affiliated with the Syrian Interim Government forces and an armed group belonging to one of the factions. The group attempted to storm the vicinity of the government complex by force to free one of the detainees, prompting the security personnel to respond by firing warning shots into the air to repel the attack.

The city of al-Nabk remains in a state of alert and anticipation, amid residents’ fears of the widening of the security tensions.
