The British government has urged its citizens to leave Syria by any means possible and urged them not to travel there due to security tensions in the region.

The British government has urged its citizens to leave Syria by any means possible and urged them not to travel there due to security tensions in the region.

The British Foreign Office said in a warning today: "We advise against all travel to Syria due to the ongoing conflict and unpredictable security conditions. If you are a British citizen in Syria, you should leave the country by any practical means."

The ministry noted that the British government does not provide consular support in Syria due to the suspension of all embassy services in Damascus years ago, and urged its citizens to contact the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London for assistance.

It added: "Your travel insurance becomes invalid if you travel contrary to the advice of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. If you choose to travel contrary to the advice, research your travel destinations and obtain appropriate travel insurance."
