Ayman Soussan was sworn in before Bashar al-Assad, today, as the Damascus government's ambassador to Saudi Arabia, as the first ambassador since the severing of relations between the two countries in 2012, after the outbreak of the Syrian crisis.

Ayman Soussan currently holds the position of Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates in the Damascus government, while he previously worked as the Damascus government’s ambassador to Belgium and the European Union until 2012.

Al-Sharq Al-Awsat newspaper previously reported that a Saudi technical team concerned with reopening the Saudi Embassy in Syria had arrived in Damascus, in implementation of Riyadh’s decision to resume the work of its diplomatic mission there, about 11 and a half years after its activity ceased.

The Saudi team met with Minister Plenipotentiary Ghazi Al-Anazi and Ayman Soussan.

Late last March, Saudi Arabia revealed discussions with Syria to resume relations, following which the Damascus government returned to the Arab League.

Maher Baddour was also appointed ambassador to Algeria, in the presence of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Damascus government, Faisal Al-Miqdad.

Maher Baddour previously held the position of Chargé d'Affaires at the Syrian Embassy in the Emirates.
