Autonomous Administration Intensifies efforts to democratize Syria

Amid growing popular demands for establishing a pluralistic democratic system that ensures the rights of all components of Syrian society, Gabriel Shamoun, the Deputy Co-Chair of the Executive Council of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria, emphasized that the administration’s model represents “a democratic model that should be applied across all Syrian territories, as it is the optimal solution for all Syrians.” 

Shamoun clarified that the Autonomous Administration’s efforts focus on “democratizing Syria” through ongoing dialogues with the transitional government in Syria.

He noted that these dialogues aim to draft a new constitution that guarantees the rights of all components and establishes democratic foundations in the country. Shamoun added that the Autonomous Administration believes a decentralized governance model is the most suitable for Syria after decades of authoritarianism and centralized rule. He stressed that this model should be included in the new constitution to grant necessary powers to all regions to establish democratic governance.

Shamoun described the democratic model of the Autonomous Administration in North and East Syria as “the best example” of a successful experience that has lasted 14 years, aimed at enabling each region to govern itself.

He emphasized the need to expand this experience to include all parts of Syria. Shamoun also underscored the importance of serious dialogue between all active Syrian parties, such as the Autonomous Administration and the transitional government, to reach a comprehensive and democratic political solution that serves all regions of Syria.

The Deputy Co-Chair of the Executive Council of the Autonomous Administration affirmed that there are many things “we can do in this current phase, addressing shared concerns to lead Syria toward a comprehensive democratic political solution for all regions of Syria in general.”
