Aleppo witnessed practical steps today to implement the agreement concluded between the General Council of the Ashrafieh and Sheikh Maqsoud neighborhoods and the Damascus authorities. Checkpoints were removed and all roads leading to the Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh neighborhoods were re-opened after a four-month closure due to the security tensions that preceded the signing of the agreement on April 1.

The removal of the checkpoints took place in joint coordination between the People's Municipality of the Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh neighborhoods and the Aleppo City Municipality. The security measures also included converting the checkpoints surrounding the area into joint security points operated by the Internal Security Forces and the General Security Service. These seven main checkpoints are: Al-Jazeera, al-Awarid, al-Jandoul Roundabout, al-Layramoun, al-Shihan Roundabout, al-Hadiqa Checkpoint, and Talat al-Ashrafieh.

In this context, Suraqah Amouri, a General Security official and representative of the Damascus authorities in the agreement with the Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh neighborhood councils, indicated in a special interview with ANHA's agency that they will work to completely clean the prisons after removing the earthen barriers and making the seven checkpoints spread around the two neighborhoods jointly operated by the Internal Security Forces and the General Security Service.

In response to inquiries about the next steps, Suraqah Amouri explained that: "The process of releasing detainees from both sides is ongoing without interruption and is expected to be completed soon."

He pointed out that "removing the barriers and sharing the management of the checkpoints was a first step to ensure safe movement before the release of the remaining detainees."

Amouri said, "The joint security forces will remain the protective shield that protects civilians from any attacks or threats to their security and safety."
