Aleppo is facing a growing waste management crisis as garbage continues to accumulate across streets and neighbourhoods, prompting residents and activists to criticise the municipality and city council over what they describe as an inadequate response to the problem.

Footage circulating from the Meridian neighbourhood, considered one of the upscale districts of western Aleppo, shows piles of rubbish accumulating along streets after sanitation crews reportedly failed to carry out their duties for nearly a week.

According to complaints shared by residents, the buildup of waste in several areas has led to unpleasant odours, particularly amid rising summer temperatures, while also contributing to an increase in insect infestations, raising concerns over potential health and environmental consequences.

Local voices have called on the relevant authorities to take urgent measures to improve sanitation services, organise waste collection and disposal operations, and prevent the crisis from worsening, warning that it is increasingly affecting the daily lives of residents.
