Iraqi official media said today that Iraqi Prime Minister Muhammad Shia al-Sudani and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad discussed, in a phone call, security coordination on issues that include confronting “the dangers of the remnants of terrorism and other security challenges.”

A statement from the Iraqi Prime Minister's Media Office stated that al-Sudani discussed with al-Assad bilateral relations and issues of common interest.

The call touched on ways to develop cooperation and expand its horizons in various fields, especially economic ones.

The discussions also included the latest developments in the situation in the region and the ongoing war in Gaza, according to the statement.

It is noteworthy that the call came after the Iraqi Prime Minister revealed that he was working to achieve “reconciliation” between the Damascus government and Turkey, saying that in his speech to Turkish media, he was in contact with “Syrian President Bashar al-Assad as well as Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan regarding reconciliation efforts.” He added: “We will see some steps in this regard soon.”

However, yesterday, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Damascus government, Faisal al-Mikdad, conditional the holding of a dialogue between his country and Turkey on the latter’s announcement of its readiness to withdraw from the Syrian territories it occupies, and he said that this is a basic condition for any dialogue between the two countries.

Al-Mikdad said during a press conference in Damascus with the acting Iranian Foreign Minister, Ali Bagheri Kani: “We want to see precise Turkish pledges that reflect Ankara’s commitment to withdraw from our lands that it occupies and stop its support for terrorist organizations.”

In his turn, the Iranian minister expressed that “Iran and Syria believe that the security and stability of the region depend on the absence of foreign intervention.
