Al-Sharq University in Raqqa to close; students to transfer to al-Furat University

The Ministry of Higher Education in the Syrian Interim Government has announced the closure of Al-Sharq University in Raqqa at the end of the academic year, with its degrees to be recognized as equivalent to those issued by public universities, and its students, staff, and assets to be transferred to Al-Furat University – Raqqa Branch.

The Ministry of Higher Education of the Syrian Interim Government announced a series of measures concerning Al-Sharq University in Raqqa, including the closure of the university and the transfer of its academic programs, students' rights, and personnel to Al-Furat University – Raqqa Branch.

In a statement issued today, the Ministry said that "degrees awarded by Al-Sharq University in Raqqa Governorate shall be considered equivalent to those granted by corresponding colleges and institutes at public universities." It added that "Al-Sharq University, including all of its faculties, will be closed effective at the end of the 2025–2026 academic year," noting that "all movable and immovable assets owned by the university shall be transferred to Al-Furat University – Raqqa Branch."

The Ministry further explained that "students have the right to transfer to Al-Furat University at its branches in Deir ez-Zor, Al-Hasakah, and Raqqa, or to equivalent faculties at any public university," in accordance with the applicable procedures and regulations. It also confirmed that "the employment status of Al-Sharq University's administrative staff will be regularized, and they will be contracted to work at Al-Furat University – Raqqa Branch."

The statement also noted that "the status of the university's academic and technical teaching staff will likewise be regularized, and they will be contracted to work at Al-Furat University."
