For 13 years, the people of the city of Al-Shaddadi in Al-Jazira Canton in the NE Syria have suffered from the cessation of water pumping through the water network within the city, and since that time the people have relied on tanker water and some water desalination plants in its countryside in order to secure drinking water.

To find a permanent solution to the drinking water problem, the People’s Municipality in the city of Al-Shaddadi began a project to rehabilitate the city’s 60-kilometre-long water network in October of last year.

In an important step towards improving the city's infrastructure, the Water Corporation announced the restart of the city's water networks after a thirteen-year interruption.

The first operation to pump water from the Euphrates River to the Al-Sinaa station in the city was carried out as a trial pumping after comprehensive maintenance work that lasted more than two and a half months.

In this context, the administrator in the Water Department of the People’s Municipality, Hamad Al-Shaaban, said: “We began work about two and a half months ago, and we began a trial pumping process during this week, where the water reached the Al-Sinaa station, then the water was diverted to the expansion district and the northern district of the city, while The southern neighborhood is still under work to completely repair the lines in preparation for the start of the pumping process there.”

Al-Shaaban added that in the coming days, work will be done to repair home networks in the neighborhoods of Al-Shaddadi city, and after that is completed, work will be done to deliver Euphrates water to neighboring villages.

He stressed that "within a month and a half from now, the work will be completely completed, and the project will enter into active service."

This project is part of ongoing efforts to improve the city's infrastructure, and aims to provide water sustainably to citizens after years of interruption.
