Iranian authorities arrest lawyer at funeral of Armita Geravand

The Iranian authorities arrested lawyer and human rights defender Nasrin Sotoudeh after she attended the funeral of Armita Geravand, who died Saturday after about a month in coma for brain damage she suffered during a violent encounter with Iran's "moral police".

Lawyer Nisreen's husband, Reda Khandan, said, "I stopped my wife during Armita's funeral with many other participants," adding that Nisreen "was violently beaten," Agence France-Presse reported.

The Iranian Fars News Agency reported yesterday evening that lawyer Nisreen was “arrested and handed over to the judicial authorities” under the pretext of “not wearing the hijab” and “carrying out activities that disrupt the psychological integrity of society.”

She was arrested several times for demonstrating against the compulsory hijab

Nisreen, 60 years old, who won the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought from the European Parliament in 2012, was arrested several times in recent years.

She was imprisoned in 2018 for defending a woman, and was arrested for demonstrating against the compulsory hijab in Iran. In 2019, she was sentenced to 12 years in prison after being convicted of “encouraging corruption and immorality.”

On Sunday (October 29), a burial ceremony was held for the body of the young woman, “Armita Geravand,” amid security tension.

The burial ceremony, which was held in the Behesht Zahraa cemetery in Tehran, was attended by members of the Armita family and a large number of citizens, according to  Iran International website.
