A fire broke out at dawn today in the Kobani prison, which houses dozens of inmates. Preliminary reports indicate that nine inmates lost their lives and seventeen others were injured, some critically.

The injured were transported to hospitals in Kobani for treatment.

The cause of the fire remains unclear as relevant authorities continue to investigate the incident; the Internal Security Forces in Kobani are expected to issue a statement clarifying the details.

The fire at the Kobani prison occurred following public protests in the city, during which demonstrators demanded an investigation into the abduction and subsequent death of Sami Hasso, a member of the Ministry of Defense, in Hasaka Governorate.
