In early January 2018, the Turkish occupation state and its mercenaries launched attacks on Afrin, displacing more than 300,000 people from their homes and forcing them to flee to Aleppo, Shahba, Kobani, and Jazira. Between November 27 and December 8, 2014, Turkish occupation state mercenaries attacked Shahba, which was sheltering displaced Afrin residents, forcing them to flee once again to Tabqa, Raqqa, Qamishlo, and Hasaka. On January 6 of this year (2016), factions of the Turkish-backed Syrian Interim Government attacked the Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh neighborhoods of Aleppo. On January 17, they attacked Deir Hafer and Tabqa, and on January 18, they attacked Raqqa, leading to the displacement of these people once more, who fled to Kobani and Jazira.

On January 29, an agreement was announced between the Syrian Democratic Forces and the Syrian Interim Government, and one of the key provisions of this agreement was the safe return of displaced persons

Although the safe return of displaced persons is a key point in the agreement, no concrete steps have been taken so far.

On February 16, the Afrin Social Association, the Afrin and Shahba Displaced Persons Council, and the Civil Society Representative Office in Europe issued a statement regarding the safe return of Afrin residents. They indicated that approximately 400-500 families would return to the districts of Jindires, Mobata, and Shiyeh.

According to information obtained by ANHA agency from private sources, negotiations have been underway for a week between the United Nations and the Afrin and Shahba Displaced Persons Council regarding the return of displaced persons and the needs associated with it.

Last week, the Council submitted a report to the United Nations outlining the needs for the return of displaced persons, but the UN has not yet responded.

The sources indicated that 400 families are ready to return to Afrin, and a date for their return will be set this week. These families will return to the districts of Mobata, Shiyeh, and Jindires.
