Battles and clashes continue between gunmen backed by Russia and gunmen accused of being affiliated with ISIS mercenaries in the city of Daraa, southern Syria.

Armed clashes have erupted in several neighborhoods in Daraa since October 31, and are still continuing intermittently, between local groups of former mercenaries from the "Free Syrian Army" supported by the Russian-backed Eighth Brigade, and armed groups accused of belonging to ISIS mercenaries.  The fighting caused deaths on both sides, as well as deaths and injuries among the citizens.

Media outlets reported that the military operations in Daraa are part of the security campaign to purify the city of ISIS mercenaries responsible for most terrorist bombings and assassinations, while other reports said that these militants have nothing to do with ISIS mercenaries, and that the decision to attack them came on orders from the Damascus government that wants to eliminate  any opposition faction refuses to reconcile with it.

These clashes come after many attempts by Russia and the Damascus government to impose control over Daraa and the whole of southern Syria through military operations and the use of the method of settlements, which has proven its failure in all areas in which it was applied. Observers believe that the so-called settlements have contributed to further complicating the Syrian situation.

The Syrian writer and dissident, Ali Al-Amin Al-Suwaid, spoke to our agency about the background of the current clashes in Daraa, saying: "The Assad regime does not stop the physical liquidation of everyone who once said no and anyone who believes that killing him increases the power of the regime, even if the victim is an ordinary person."

"The regime's principle is to continue killing until all opponents and their supporters are saved, even those who did not object to the actions of the opponents," he added.

He pointed out that "the regime does not differentiate between a revolutionary opponent who continues his revolution against tyranny and slavery, and those who found themselves part of the system and cannot get out of it, so they joined the ranks of the regime to fight those who were on their side yesterday."

Al-Suwaid considered that what is happening in Daraa recently "falls under the item of liquidations by friendly fire carried out by the Fifth Corps, which was established by Ahmed al-Awda under Russian sponsorship, and is targeted by yesterday's comrades in arms."

He explained, "These remedy operations are carried out with the aim of maintaining harmony loyal to Russia, the sponsor of the Assad regime. It is not permissible to change leaderships, and it is not permissible to object to changing the content of the terms of reconciliations with the regime, so the clashes take place to kill the objectors under the cover of ISIS and militants. The truth is that the two parties are in the trench of the regime and follow  his agendas.”
