Massacre of Turkish occupation in Zakho..deliberate process to achieve political and economic goals

Turkey constantly commits crimes and massacres against the peoples of the region and targets civilians under flimsy pretexts, and the evidence for this is its massacre of tourists in Zakho district, Southern Kurdistan.

Last Wednesday, the Turkish occupation army bombed a group of tourists with four artillery shells in the village of Barkh in Dar Kari in Zakho, killing 9 people and wounding 23 others, according to Roj News Agency.

Iraqi political circles believe that there are several goals for this massacre. They may include expanding into the Iraqi depth, forcing the residents migrate by destabilizing local security, and working to adopt demographic change policies for the region, impose a new geographical reality similar to its project in Syria.  and the establishment of the so-called "safe zone".

Turkey claims to protect its national security by launching attacks on areas in southern Kurdistan and northeastern Syria, but the massacre committed by the Turkish occupation in Zakho revealed its allegations, as it targeted civilians who fled the summer heat, and the occupation fire was waiting for them, as observers see that the main reason for the attacks  not as Turkey claims, but rather in order to acquire the provinces of Mosul and Kirkuk, which it considers its historical lands.

The Iraqi researcher and political historian, Dr. Jawad Al-Baydani, explained in an exclusive interview to our agency the purpose of the Turkish occupation from the massacre it committed in Zakho, and said: "Hitting this region will lead to an economic depression that will affect tourism in these areas, and therefore the Iraqi citizen will be forced to go outside his country.  This will harm the tourism sector in the region, as the goal is economic as well as political to prove the argument against the governments of Baghdad and the region that they do not protect their citizens, so the Turkish government wanted to justify this event, but it justified it illogically. It is not reasonable for the PKK to kill its citizens.

He added, "The operation is well thought out; Turkey is planning to attack other areas to prove the argument, after it failed to occupy areas in north and east Syria due to Russian and even American pressure."

 In the same context, he continued, "The truth is, Erdogan is trying to justify after the level of popular support reached a very low level throughout Turkey, so he tried to show that he is more interested in national security or in Turkish national security than other politicians. He also closed the door to Turkish nationalists who are trolling him  to remove him from power."

"So, they are interrelated factors, an economic factor to weaken tourism in the region and a political factor to prove the argument, as well as exploiting the international crisis situation as well as destabilizing security in the region. Turkey is a factor of permanent instability in the region, as is well known," according to Al-Baidani.

Turkey takes advantage of global crises

The Iraqi researcher and historian believes that Turkey has exploited the current situation in the world, such as the Ukraine problem, the crisis in Syria and the Russian-American crisis, to implement its goals.

He added, "It can be said that Turkey has started to play on both sides. On the one hand, it mediates for the release of Ukrainian grain ships to the world. Therefore, Russia needs it, and on the other hand, the United States of America needs it to calm the situation and open channels of communication with Russia after Russia closed  channels of communication during a certain period, so Turkey took advantage of the situation now in the region to act with its usual arrogance."

He noted that the area that was targeted is a civilian area frequented by vacationers from all over Iraq and the world, and it is common for vacationers to arrive at this time of the year.

A situation that does not rise to the level of the threat

The massacre committed by the Turkish occupation in Zakho drew widespread Iraqi, Arab and Western condemnation, and they demanded that it stop interfering in neighboring countries under false pretexts, with the exception of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, which legitimized the crime of the Turkish occupation.

 In this regard, Nechirvan Barzani said that "the Iraqi federal government should prevent threats to the security of neighboring countries from Iraqi territory."

Regarding the position of Iraqi politicians, Al-Baydani believes: "It does not rise to the extent of the challenge that these areas have been exposed to and the magnitude of the threat to which these areas are exposed. Some of them justified Turkey's heinous actions against innocent children and women and threw the quiver in a load other than the one that was carried on it, which is  Turkey is the direct and main cause of perpetrating this massacre, and therefore I hoped that the response would be commensurate with the event."

And the Iraqi researcher and political historian, Dr. Jawad Al-Baydani, added at the conclusion of his speech that: "The position of His Eminence Muqtada Al-Sadr was positive by making statements and at the same time calling on demonstrators to demonstrate in areas in front of the Turkish embassy."

The leader of the Sadrist movement, Muqtada al-Sadr, had suggested implementing four proposals or some of them: reducing diplomatic representation with Turkey, closing airports and land crossings with it, filing a complaint with the United Nations through official channels as soon as possible, and canceling the security agreement with it.
