QAMISHLO

Under the slogan "The cry of the people of indigenous people," the Syriac Union Party in Syria recalled during an event organized today in Qamishlo, the 106th anniversary of the genocide (Sayfo) against Syriacs, Armenians and Assyrians.

A number of families and feminist, social, cultural, political and military activities from various Syrian components participated in the remembrance event.

Banners reading "Sayfo is a people's cause that will not die" and pictures of the massacre, the hanging gallows and the forcible deportations of them were hung in the place of the event.

The event began with a minute of silence, followed by the lighting of remembrance candles by the co-chairs of the Syriac Union Party in Syria, Sanharib Barsoum and Nazira Gaweriyah.

Then Gaweriyah spoke, saying: "106 years have passed since the worst ethnic genocide in the 20th century, which affected the Syriac and Assyrian people during the rule of the Ottoman Empire."

She stated: “By a decision of the rulers of the Sultanate, it was decided to exterminate all Christian peoples, which resulted in the martyrdom of 750,000 of the Syriac people, in a systematic policy to uproot our people from their historical land and obliterate their identity. The people and their property, as it affected the character of our people, which continues to this day.

She explained that they in the Syriac Union Party are seeking to internationalize the issue and gain its recognition at the international level. She said: "Turkey must recognize the genocide against our people, and justice cannot be achieved without the international recognizing our demands."

She noted the role of the Syrian Democratic Forces in defeating ISIS, which posed a threat to all components of the region, and said: "But Turkey still exists and the Justice and Development Party still exists. This means that the danger still exists and threatens the peoples of the region."

After the words, the Syriac Inana troupe presented a theatrical performance similar to what the Ottomans committed against the Christian peoples by striking the stomachs of Christian women with the sword and flaunting their actions, practices and deportations, followed by a show that simulated the reality of the massacre.

Then the remembrance event ended with a candlelight march that toured the streets of the Al-Wusta neighborhood, during which the participants chanted for the martyrs, and when they arrived at the roundabout of the massacre martyrs on Al-Quwatli Street, they placed candles on the memorial.
