Day after day, the components in northern and eastern Syria learn more about their mother tongue, especially the Kurdish and Syriac components, which the Damascus government denied the right to learn in their mother tongue before the Rojava revolution.

However, after the start of the Rojava revolution and the establishment of the Autonomous Administration, any component in the regions of northern and eastern Syria can learn freely in their mother tongue.

February 21 marks the International Mother Language Day, which is celebrated by the peoples of the world and of particular importance to the components of the people in the Autonomous Administration regions, especially the Syriacs and the Kurds who witnessed a linguistic revival in recent years.

About this, our agency monitored the views of a number of teachers from the components of the northern and eastern regions of Syria, talking about the importance of the mother tongue, and the state that languages have reached after the establishment of the Autonomous Administration.

'Language keeps peoples alive'

Samira Hanna, a teacher of the Syriac language at the Ulf Tau Foundation, says, "The Syriac language is a cultural heritage and a badge on our chest, and we are proud of our language."

Samira believes that it is necessary to speak the mother tongue and spread it around the world. She added, "There is a need for a person to learn his language, so that his children learn after him, thus his language does not disappear and remain alive forever."

'We couldn't learn our language before now'

Samira Hanna explains how to protect the mother tongue, and how to teach it to children and teach it in schools, and says, "These children will grow up, and they will teach their children in the future, or become teachers themselves, and this is how they will teach future generations."

'Free after the establishment of the Autonomous Administration'

She says about this, "If we were arrested by the state at that time, we would have faced an investigation or our end would be in prison, but now, after the establishment of the Autonomous Administration, we no longer feel fear and learn our language easily, before the establishment of the administration, we were not."

'Each component should be taught in its mother tongue'

As for Dalal Ramadan, an Arabic teacher who is learning the Syriac language at the Ulf Tau Foundation to teach Syriac students the Syriac language, she says, “Students should read in their own language and become familiar with it, so everyone will be able to protect their mother tongue, and every component must do so to protect its language."

'The Kurds must be qualified for their language before anything else'

In a related context, the co-chair of the Kurdish Language Foundation, Ezzeddin Suleiman, says that for every human being, language is an identity and an issue of existence, especially for persecuted peoples, foremost among which is the Kurdish people.

He added, "For more than 100 years, our language is prohibited, the enemies and occupiers have denied us from learning our language. If there is a people without a language, they cannot say that they have an identity

"The language will not develop if the people do not receive education in the mother tongue, and to protect it, it must be taught and learned," he added.

At the end of his speech, the co-chair of the Kurdish Language Foundation, Ezzeddin Suleiman, said, "The Kurdish component must be qualified for its mother tongue first of all, as peoples who are not eligible for its language are erased."
