Aisha Hesso: Turkification policy prolongs Syrian crisis

The Co-chair of the Democratic Union Party, Aisha Hesso, said that the Turkish policy of Turkish occupation prolongs the duration of the Syrian crisis, stressing the need for the real representatives of the people to be included in the dialogue table to find a solution that satisfies all parties. She also expected an explosion in the intertwined Idlib file, which Turkey uses to move it to divert attention about its internal problems.

The Turkish occupation state continues to follow Turkification policies in the areas it occupied, such as imposing Turkish curricula and changing its demographics, as well as bargaining over the Idlib governorate file, which has recently witnessed escalation and military mobilization by all parties.

On this issue, our agency conducted a meeting with the Co-chair of the Democratic Union Party, Aisha Hesso, to discuss the causes and implications of the Turkification policy in the region and ways to confront it, in addition to the situation in the Syrian province of Idlib.

Prolonging the crisis

Aisha began her speech by saying, “If we want to analyze the Syrian crisis in general, it is taking the line of arms day after day, specifically in 2021.”

On the real goal of holding conferences such as Geneva and Astana, Aisha said, “When we mention Geneva, we cannot overlook the Astana issue because the content of Geneva comes to protect and perpetuate Astana, and the question here is why? Because the plan drawn up in Astana which was approved by the three parties in Astana; Russia, Turkey and Iran is to keep the war ongoing and prolong it.”

Aisha continued, “For that, we can say that the Turkish state, since the outbreak of the Syrian crisis, embracing the Syrian opposition and supporting it in various ways and means, is in order to create a ground for its occupational and expansionist plan in the region and to complete its deal in Astana by extending the life of war.”

Turkification policy

On the Turkish policies in the occupied territories, Aisha said, “We all know the conditions of the cities of al-Bab, Azaz, Idlib and Jarablus, and the conditions of Serêkaniyê, Afrin and Girê Spî that are not far from them. This scheme was hatched by the Turkish occupation with expansion and demarcation of its borders aimed to revive the Ottoman Empire, and this is confirmed by the Justice and Development Party in the person of the statements of its President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.”

Aisha also noted that the chaos in the city of Idlib is the result of the policies of cultural dissolution pursued by Turkey in all the areas it occupied, whether in terms of imposing the Turkish language or raising the flags of the Turkish occupation and changing the original names of the areas to Turkish names.

Aisha Hesso also touched on the topic of opening a Turkish university on Syrian lands, and considered it a step that can only be translated by the fact that the Turkish state’s plan is not to support the Syrian opposition or find a solution to the Syrian crisis, but rather to complete the Turkish policy pursued in the region: “We have said this since the first day of the Turkish intervention in the region.”

Aisha continued: “The lack of a solution to the Syrian crisis so far is the result of Turkish policies and its negative role in the region, and let us take the situation of Afrin for example, as the demographic change has reached a very dangerous level and the rest of the areas in which Turkey has intervened under the name of protecting the Syrian regions and creating an environment for the patronage of the national opposition; however, the reality is quite the opposite.”

As for what is required at this stage, Aisha said, "What is required is to know the truth of the interfering forces in the Syrian affairs and to define our policy on the basis of that. We have said from the first day no to the occupation, no to demographic change, and we are struggling on this basis.”

Aisha noted: “We, as the Democratic Union Party, started with the democratic policy on the Syrian lands instead of the policies of the Syrian regime and the opposition that work under Turkey's control.”

She explained: "That is why we are exposed to many attacks by all sides because we represent the democratic side of the equation, and the rest of the parties do not have a project to negotiate on, and this is the main reason for the failure of conferences held such as Geneva and its multiple rounds.”

A dialogue without real representatives is rejected

Aisha referred to the conferences held without the participation of the representatives of the people, saying: “Those who sat around the table did not negotiate in the interest of Syria or to find a solution to the unresolved crisis, but rather the opposite. Each of them worked for its own interest and maintaining its influence in the region as much as possible, taking advantage of the chaos that is spreading in the region. Every dialogue is held without the Autonomous Administration and representatives of the forces that defeated terrorism on the Syrian land, protected the values and gained the confidence of the international community in fighting ISIS will not succeed, and the crisis will continue without a solution.”

Idlib file is the way to escape from crises

Aisha talked about the current crisis in Idlib of Turkish military mobilizations and promoting the idea of a dangerous and military escalation in the region, saying: “It is a continuation of the Astana play, as the current situation there is based on satisfying the other.”

Aisha continued: “The Turkish state entered a stage of confusion, especially in 2021 because after the change in the international arena, it cannot continue with the current policy with the Russians and cannot break up with NATO, especially with America, and the Turkish internal situation is tense, so it deals with people in a dictatorial way and suppresses them.”

Aisha noted that Turkey is resorting to the Idib file to evade all outstanding problems, so it promotes its projects there to dismiss the rest of the problems.”

Aisha asserted, “The Syrian people are differentiating between right and wrong, as they reject the occupation, its supporters and the policies of the Turkish state, and that the resistance that was demonstrated in Afrin is still continuing in al-Shahba canton in its second phase, and the resistance of Serêkaniyê is still continuing in Washokani camp. In order to thwart the Turkish plan, this resistance must be continued at all levels.”

Then, the Co-chair of the Democratic Union Party, Aisha Hesso, ended her speech with the expectation that the intertwined file in Idlib would explode as a result of the arrival of the parties to a dead end and the entry of the region into a state of overwhelming chaos.
