A United Nations spokesman said that about 20 UN peacekeepers were wounded in an attack on their base in central Mali on Wednesday, and presented a tentative toll, according to what was reported by Agence France-Presse.

Militants attacked a makeshift base near the village of Kirina, in central war-torn Mali, around seven in the morning.

The spokesman for the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA), which has 13,000 soldiers, Olivier Salgado, said that the site "was targeted by direct and indirect fire."

Mali is struggling to contain the jihadist insurgency that first emerged in the north of the country in 2012 and has since spread to the center of the country and to neighboring Burkina Faso and Niger.

Thousands of soldiers and civilians were killed and hundreds of thousands were forced to flee their homes as a result of the revolt.
