The Syrian Democratic Council organized the symposium in Afrin Hall, located in Sheqayyef region of Aleppo city, in which political parties and independent Syrian personalities from various Syrian governorates, in addition to a number of representatives of human rights and civil organizations attended.

The symposium included two main axes, namely "the Turkish state's ambitions and agendas historically in the region," and "The Turkish state and its mercenaries' violations towards the peoples of Afrin region with its various segments, beliefs, and political affiliations, in addition to the search for ways to confront them and how to address their negative repercussions on the region."

The symposium began with holding a minute of silence in tribute for the martyrs' souls, followed by the reading of the first axis by the Head of the Executive Body of the Syrian Democratic Council, Ilham Ahmed. She said: "The Turkish occupation in Afrin aims to purify the cultural and ethnic reality in Afrin, and to disperse all components that used to coexist by disguising themselves in the cloak of the Islamic religion."

Hiding behind religion to control the region

Ilham added: "The Turkish state is still seeking to implement its old policies that it practiced four centuries ago during the Ottoman Empire, as the occupation practiced its exclusionary policies in the name of Islam with the aim of controlling and occupying the peoples of the region."

Ilham noted during her speech: "The Russian withdrawal from Afrin before its occupation, and leaving the peoples to meet their destiny indicates that states are concerned with their interests in the first place, and not to support peoples in determining their destiny."

Regarding the Damascus government's siege of al-Shahba canton, Ilham Ahmed said: "We saw that the Syrian government works to impose a siege on its people in the refugee camps and paves the way for the Turkish occupation to bombard Tel Rifaat and target unarmed civilians."

As for the second axis, Gabriel Mostafa, the Member of the Human Rights Organization in Afrin - Syria read a report supported by documents describing the Turkish crimes in Afrin region during the years of its occupation.

The symposium also included the attendance of four children who had been disfigured as a result of the Turkish war mechanism targeting them in Afrin earlier, two of them had their faces burnt, and the other two had a limb amputated, as living evidence of crimes against childhood in the occupied regions by Turkey.

After reading the two axes of the symposium, the discussion was opened for the attendees to enrich the seminar and discuss ways to liberate the occupied territories.

Among the participants in the discussion was the Head of the Syrian Renaissance and Change Party, Mostafa Kalaji, who said: "The Turkish flag in Afrin is the same as the one in al-Bab and Jarablus regions. The Turkish officers are the ones who run the area in Afrin and other areas. The Turkish government operates under the orders of world regimes, and it would not have dared to occupy any region in Syria if it had not received the green light. Its project is approved in Astana, and this indicates international complicity in the issue of the occupation of Afrin."
