Macron, during a speech at the Southern European Union summit, expressed solidarity with Cyprus and Greece in light of unilateral provocations by the Turkish side.

The French president added that Turkey seeks hegemony and control in the eastern Mediterranean, adding that Ankara's behavior increases tension in the region.

Macron stated that the summit held on the island of Corsica comes "in light of the challenges we face in the eastern Mediterranean region," and called on Turkey to respect the arms embargo on Libya.

Macron said on Thursday that he would seek to adopt a unified European position towards the Turkish escalation in the eastern Mediterranean, and he called on European leaders to be more firm about Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
