Complaints about price discrepancies and returning the reason to dealing in dollars

Most of al-Jazeera region residents are complaining about the price discrepancy among the shops in the markets, and they are calling for the concerned authorities to unify them, while the shopkeepers confirm that the dollar exchange rate is the reason, and the Supply Directorate called on the people to cooperate.

With the entry into force of the Caesar Act and the rise in the price of the dollar against the Syrian pound, an increase in food prices appeared, in addition to some merchants controlling the prices of commodities and selling them in dollars, which creates a problem of discrepancy in the prices of materials. In spite of the intensive rounds of the Supply divisions, controlling prices in the markets is a difficult issue.

The people of Tirbê Spiyê district in al-Jazeerah region explain that merchants are manipulating the prices of materials, and there is a discrepancy of the price of the materials among stores.

The citizen Othman Saleh says: "The prices of materials are very high compared to the salaries we receive, and the high prices are unnatural, as the price of the commodity reaches 4 times its old price," and he called on the concerned authorities to intervene and unify prices.

For his part, Hassen Ahmed al-Hassen pointed out that there is a discrepancy in the prices of commodities from one place to another, and indicated that the Supply Division is required to identify the differences in prices and the reasons for their increase.

Bashir Yunus, the owner of a shop in the central market in Tirbê Spiyê district explained that some merchants sell all the materials to the shops in dollars, and others sell in Syrian pounds, which pushes the shopkeepers to sell the materials in dollars to the citizen, and said: "The main problem is that the price of the dollar is unstable and varies from hour to hour, making it difficult to control prices."

Bashir emphasized that the big merchants control the market, not the owner of the small shop.

The Administrator in the Supply Division in Tirbê Spiyê district Comrade Hikmat Hassen confirmed that they distribute the price lists on a daily basis to the stores and the vegetable market, and that the reason for the price discrepancy is the instability of the dollar price against the Syrian pound.

Hassen explained that people complain about prices, but they do not go to the Supply Division. He called on the people to visit the Supply Division when they noticed an increase or discrepancy in prices. He said: "The Supply Division receives complaints a 24-hour clock."

In order to solve the problem of price discrepancies and high prices, the Economic and Agriculture Body has opened consumer institutions in the cities and districts of north and east Syria, including Tirbê Spiyê district, and according to the institution's administrator Yunus Hajj Selo, there is a high turnout by the people due to the appropriate prices compared to the prices of the district's market.

Selo confirmed that the consumer establishment is trying as much as possible to meet the basic needs of the people of foodstuffs to limit the monopoly of prices.
