The works of the first day of the International Kurdish Conference in its sixteenth session were launched in Belgian capital, Brussels, yesterday in the European Union headquarter.

Yesterday, at the European Union’s in the Belgian capital, Brussels, the work of the sixteenth session of the International Kurdish Conference began.

A number of academics and politicians from around the world are participating in the conference this year, including the South African scientist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Desmond Togo, Iranian human rights defender Sherine Abadi, the High Commissioner for Peace at the Council of Europe and the President of the Human Rights Foundation Bianca Jagger, the famous linguist and philosopher Noam Chomsky is the author of the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought and former parliamentarian for the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Leila Zana.

During the first session held yesterday, several topics were discussed related to the Turkish issue and the Kurdish issue, including the issue of the conflict over water sources, where lecturers pointed out that the most important water sources in Turkey originate from the Kurdish areas, and in this regard he pointed to the permanent conflict over water sources in Mesopotamia throughout history.

Among the other topics discussed is the European position on Turkish violations, whether in Turkey or in the regions of northern and eastern Syria, and the lecturers on this topic pointed out that the European Union denounced the Turkish occupation of the regions of northern and eastern Syria, but the European Union countries did not stop arms sales to Turkey and they called on the European media to do more in this area.

Conference participants also discussed in the first session issues related to the Kurdish issue in northern Kurdistan and the peace stage between the PKK and the Turkish state, and held the Turkish state and the Justice and Development Party responsible for the failure of the peace process.

The second session of the conference's first day included a lecture entitled "Turkish Relations and the European Union, Membership Negotiations, Refugee Crisis and the Kurds".

Professor Genghis Aktar moderated the session.

The discussions of the second session confirmed that the current Turkey cannot join the European Union, and the participants pointed to the total violations taking place inside Turkey in terms of arresting politicians, journalists and civilians, and human rights violations.

The participants also referred to Turkish policies regarding the use of the refugee card against Europe, forcing the European Union to make concessions to Turkey.

The conference continues its work today, centering on Turkish violations in Rojava and the endeavors of the new Ottoman Empire, the situation of the Kurds and the massacres of genocide they are exposed to, the position of the European Union and other issues.
