The joint mayor of the Kurdish city of Mardin, Ahmad al-Turk, participated in the meeting held yesterday in the Swedish Parliament, which was organized by a group calling itself the committee to support the Kurdish people against the deprivation of the will of the Kurds, in the presence of a number of Swedish parliamentarians and political and human rights figures interested in Kurdish affairs.

Ahmed al-Turk's intervention was about the dismissal of the mayors of Amed, Mardin and Wan by the AKP.

Parliamentarians at the meeting posed several questions to Ahmad al-Turk, including: "What are the reasons behind the Turkish authorities to put obstacles in the struggle for the freedom of the Kurdish people? To what extent do international forces support the Kurdish struggle? Why does the Turkish authorities accuse you of supporting terrorism in the country?

Asked about the AKP's policy towards the Kurdish people, Ahmad al-Turk said: "The Turkish state does not only treat the PKK as a terrorist movement. All the Kurdish people who claim their legitimate rights and all democratic forces in the country are classified as terrorist or support terrorism."

"The leader of the Kurdish people, Abdullah Ocalan, was severely isolated inside Imrali Island prison to prevent his voice and ideas from being delivered abroad, and he is doing everything he has to resolve the issue peacefully away from violence in the country," he said.

The joint mayor of the Kurdish city of Mardin, Ahmed al-Turk, stressed that the Kurdish people are struggling to consolidate the foundations of democracy and coexistence in the country, and even to consolidate democracy throughout the Middle East.
