Pederson left Syria after 3-day visit

The UN envoy to Syria Geir Pederson left Damascus to Lebanon on Thursday after he stressed the need for the UN-sponsored political solution to end the ongoing conflict in the country.

A UN source in Damascus has said that the UN envoy Geir Pederson left Damascus for Beirut on Thursday morning after a three-day visit during which he met with the foreign minister of the Syrian regime Walid al-Muallem.

On Wednesday night, Pedersen described on his Twitter account, his meeting with al-Muallem as constructive. He said, "I stressed the need for a political solution based on UN resolution 2254 which emphasizes on the sovereignty and territorial security of Syria. He calls for a political solution with Syrian ownership and leadership facilitated by the United Nation."

He noted that he agreed with Damascus to visit regularly to discuss the points of agreement and achiving progress in the controversial issues.

Geir Pederson faces an arduous task to find a solution to the Syrian crisis with numerous regional and international interventions.
