Syrian opponent, Leila Shweikani killed under torture by regime

The Syrian Human Rights Committee reported the death of Syrian detainee Leila Shweikani, who is a US citizen under torture in Sednaya prison in Damascus.

Leila Shweikani moved from Adra prison in the Damascene countryside to Sednaya prison in 2016. News of her execution was leaked after news broke out about her to her relatives, activists and the media.

Some social networking sites have reported that the detainee Leila Shweikani was killed two years ago under torture, but that the Syrian regime did not leak this news to the Civil Registry Directory until the last hours of the day.

Leila Shweikani, an information engineer, from the Damascene countryside, was opposed to the Syrian regime and was arrested at the beginning of 2016.

According to a report by the Syrian Human Rights Network, the number of women killed under torture in Syria between March 2011 and November 2018 reached 90 women, and 80% of them were killed by the regime.

In addition, between 2011 and 2018, the number of women detained in Syria or under enforced disappearance was approximately 10,000, and 82% were arrested and hidden by the regime.

Sednaya prison is considered one of the most dangerous prisons in what Amnesty International described as a "human abattoir" in a report published in 2017 because of the mass executions witnessed against those who oppose the Syrian regime, as well as massacres committed against detainees there.
