UN: Syrian regime used chlorine gas in Eastern al-Ghouta

UN investigators confirmed that the Syrian regime targeted the eastern al-Ghouta with banned chlorine gas during its attack to regain control, in conjunction with international warnings of the regime to launch a similar attack in Idlib.

UN human rights investigators said on Wednesday, the Syrian regime has fired chlorine, a banned chemical weapon, in the eastern al-Ghouta and Idlib province this year in attacks represent war crimes.

A UN official told Reuters that these incidents raise the number of chemical attacks, which the commission of Inquiry on Syria has documented in the country since 2013, to 39, including 33 attacks attributed to the government. The identity of the perpetrator was not identified in the other six attacks.

The United States warns the Syrian regime against using chemical weapons in a planned attack on Idlib, in the north of the country.

US national security adviser John Bolton said Monday that the United States and its British and French allies had agreed that any use of other chemical weapons by Damascus would lead to a significant escalation, compared to the previous strike after chemical use in Khan Sheikhoun, Idlib.

Bolton said in a statement "If chemical weapons were used, the response this time will be much stronger."
