On 20 January 2018, Afrin was subjected to a barbaric Turkish aggression and the people of the canton were forced after a historic resistance to leave their homes forcibly to avoid the massacres and violations of the Turkish occupation army and its mercenaries on Afrin and headed towards al-Shahba area.

In the areas of al-Shahba, death has been chasing the people of Afrin as a result of the presence of mines from the remnants of IS mercenaries who controlled of the area before its liberation, which also witnessed the destruction of the infrastructure due to the fierce battles that took place there. The land still contains many mines planted by ISIS before fleeing, so that people live in the midst of life-threatening risks to the lives and children’s constantly.

According to statistics obtained by ANHA agency, since the displacement of the people of Afrin from their homes and their arrival in al-Shahba areas and so far, 17 civilians have lost their lives and 27 others have been injured.

In this context, the co-chair of Tel-Qarah Council, Balda Sheikho, a resident of the villages where IS mercenaries had planted a lot of mines, said "We are working hard to educate the people and guide them not to wander in areas where there have been battles and empty spaces, and the absence of an engineering team to save the lives of civilians in al-Shahba increases risks. "

At the end of her speech she appealed to the international community and demining organizations to go to al-Shahba and save the lives of the people of Afrin and al-Shahba from the remnants of ISIS.
