A Lebanese official reported today, Monday, that the recent events in the coastal region of Syria have led to the displacement of 1,476 families to the towns of Akkar in northern Lebanon.

The Governor of Akkar, Imad Labaki, stated today to the official Lebanese National News Agency that "the recent crisis in Syria has led to a massive influx into the Akkar Plain and part of the Dreib region, with the majority of the displaced being Alawites, and some of them being Lebanese who entered through illegal crossings and settled in the Alawite villages in mosques and houses."

He pointed out that the total number of families who sought refuge from Syria reached 1,476 families as of yesterday, including 40 Lebanese families and 1,184 Syrian families, according to the Disaster Management Room in Akkar.

Clashes erupted last Thursday between the Damascus authority forces and armed groups from the former Baathist regime in the cities and countryside of the Syrian coast, followed by acts of violence that resulted in the death and injury of thousands of people, most of whom were civilians.
