120 Syrian figures in Hasaka discuss peacebuilding, transitional Justice

A human rights conference held in Hasaka, with the participation of approximately 120 figures from various Syrian regions, explored ways to build peace through "dealing with the past" and discussed a policy paper outlining the fundamental principles of a Syrian mechanism in this regard. The next step involves launching an advocacy phase for the paper and sharing it with local and international authorities to work on developing complementary mechanisms for transitional justice.

HASAKA

The Humanitarian and Development Cooperation Foundation, in cooperation with the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, held the concluding conference on addressing the past towards a Syrian peacebuilding mechanism at the Shto Resort in Hasaka city.

The conference was attended by 120 cultural, social, tribal, and religious figures, as well as human rights activists working in the field of peacebuilding and civil peace from the cities of the Jazira region, in addition to participants from Idlib, Hama, Raqqa, and Kobani.

The conference, which aimed, according to its program, to promote understanding, build trust, and help guide efforts towards a shared vision that forms the basis for addressing the past in the Syrian context, discussed the recommendations stemming from previous conferences held with local authorities and leaders regarding their perceptions and visions for implementing this approach.

It also presented a shared vision to assist experts in drafting a paper on "Basic Principles for a Syrian Peacebuilding Mechanism Based on Addressing the Past."

During the conference, BlInd Mulla; an expert on programs dealing with the past spoke to ANHA agency and stated, "This conference follows seven conferences held in various regions of Syria to discuss a mechanism for peace in Syria. A policy paper entitled 'Basic Principles for a Syrian Peacebuilding Mechanism Based on Addressing the Past' was prepared. This paper aims to build common ground with all Syrian local communities for peace, based on the concepts of addressing the past, and taking into account the specificities of local communities and the issues of victims across Syria."

He added, "The conference discussed this policy paper, which is the product of collective work involving 645 participants from various regions of Syria. Finally, the conference will explore a mechanism for peacebuilding in Syria and the establishment of complementary mechanisms for transitional justice. The conference's work will not end there; rather, it will serve as a launch for advocating this policy paper and sharing it with local and international authorities."
