The pace of attacks carried out by ISIS mercenaries in Deir ez-Zor Canton in NE Syria is escalating, a worrying sign of a resurgence of ISIS mercenary activity, despite joint operations by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), the Internal Security Forces, and the international coalition.

Since the beginning of this year, 114 ISIS attacks have been recorded in Deir ez-Zor, including ambushes, bombings, and direct fire attacks on checkpoints and military vehicles. These attacks resulted in the deaths of 22 SDF fighters, while three ISIS mercenaries were killed in subsequent clashes or security operations.

Two members of the Internal Security Forces were wounded, while these attacks resulted in the deaths of nine civilians and the injury of 25 others.

The most recent of these attacks, announced by the Syrian Democratic Forces last Saturday, targeted three of their positions and those of the Internal Security Forces in the Deir ez-Zor countryside, killing one fighter and wounding others.
