The Wall Street Journal revealed on Wednesday that "Israel is pressing world powers on the idea of making the emerging new state in Syria a federal system of ethnic autonomous regions, with the southern border areas demilitarized by Israel."

The newspaper added: "For two decades, Israel's next-door neighbor was Bashar al-Assad, a hostile dictator weakened by sectarian divisions in Syria. Now, Israel is trying to neutralize what security officials see as a threat: Turkish-backed Islamists trying to unify Syria."

In recent days, the Israeli army has targeted more military sites in southern Syria to prevent weapons from reaching the Damascus government or any other party.

Last week, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu demanded that southern Syria be “demilitarized.” He stressed: “We will not allow the new radical Islamic regime in Syria to harm the Druze.”

While Israel seeks to protect its borders and create a buffer zone, its actions, according to the newspaper, are paving the way for an Israeli vision of a federal Syria with an autonomous Druze-controlled region along its border.
