The General Assembly approved the resolution, which was drafted by Egypt, with 123 votes in favor, 7 against, and 41 abstentions.

The resolution states that Israel’s declaration of 14 December 1981 imposing its laws, jurisdiction, and administration on the occupied Syrian Golan is “null and void and without any legal effect.”

It also “reaffirms once again that Israel must withdraw from the entire occupied Syrian Golan to the line of June 4, 1967, in implementation of the relevant Security Council resolutions,” stressing that the continued occupation and annexation of the Golan constitute “an obstacle to achieving a just, comprehensive, and lasting peace in the region.”

Meanwhile, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar stated last month that his country is “interested” in normalizing relations with Syria and Lebanon, emphasizing that the Golan Heights will remain “an integral part” of Israel in any potential peace agreement.
