UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy, speaking before the House of Commons, stated that Syria’s stability has become an urgent necessity, particularly in regard to combating terrorism and ensuring regional security. He emphasized the importance of ending the ongoing violence in southern Syria.

Lammy said the United Kingdom was “shocked by the recent violence in southern Syria and the resulting civilian deaths.”

He added, “As I told Foreign Minister Al-Shaibani directly, we want to see an end to the fighting, the protection of civilians, and the safeguarding of the rights of all Syrians,” stressing that “the violence in Sweida must be investigated and those responsible held to account.”

Lammy also stressed the need to reopen humanitarian corridors and resume the delivery of aid. He explained that the current phase requires efforts to prevent extremism, sectarianism, and chaos from taking root in Syria following Assad’s downfall. He affirmed that the UK “supports a sustainable ceasefire and backs an inclusive political transition,” noting that this is why he recently visited Damascus.

Concluding his briefing on the latest developments in Syria, he said he had urged “the new government to fulfill its commitments.”

In early July, Lammy made a visit to Syria, marking the first by a senior UK official in 14 years.
