Agence France-Presse (AFP) said that the Turkish police arrested dozens of demonstrators who gathered in Istanbul to celebrate Labor Day.

The first clashes occurred when demonstrators tried to break through police barriers to reach Taksim Square, which witnessed in 2013 protests against Erdogan.

Tens of thousands of police were deployed throughout Istanbul and even small streets were closed with metal barriers in an attempt to prevent demonstrators from gathering.

In the Besiktas district, police stopped at least 30 demonstrators who were chanting, “Access to Taksim cannot be blocked.” The police dragged a demonstrator and arrested the group. In the Sisli area, 30 demonstrators were arrested. Main roads across Istanbul were closed to traffic, while public transportation, including ferries and subway trains, was suspended.
