The White House announced yesterday that President Donald Trump signed an executive order ending the U.S. sanctions on Syria.

A senior official at the U.S. Department of the Treasury confirmed that "the measure paves the way for Syria to rejoin the global financial system and opens up opportunities for trade and investment from the United States and regional countries." The official also noted that "the U.S. administration is currently reviewing Syria’s designation as a state sponsor of terrorism."

According to informed sources at the White House, the decision includes lifting the ban on U.S. commercial dealings with Damascus and allows foreign companies and third parties to resume their economic relations with Syria without facing U.S. sanctions.

The Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper quoted a White House official as saying that the decision was based on recommendations from the Office of Foreign Assets Control at the Treasury Department and the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, in cooperation with the U.S. Department of State.
