Tishrin Dam Resistance hits two-month mark

Since January 8, the people of North and East Syria have been protesting at Tishrin Dam in opposition to and condemnation of the attacks it has been subjected to. The protest is organized through regular shifts, with participation from Arabs, Kurds, Syriacs, Armenians, Circassians, and Yazidis.

 Since December 8, 2024, Tishrin Dam and the Qara Qozak Bridge have been under attack by the Turkish occupation forces and their mercenaries, using warplanes, drones, artillery, missiles, and mortars. These attacks have caused significant damage to the structure of the dam. According to dam officials, the continued assaults could lead to a potential humanitarian disaster due to the shutdown of turbines and the emergence of cracks and fissures in the dam’s structure.

 The first convoys of civilians arrived from the city of Kobani, consisting of thousands of residents from the North and East Syria region, aiming to stop the brutal Turkish attacks and protect the dam from airstrikes and heavy artillery shelling.

 The protests at Tishrin Dam began in the form of shifts, with civilian convoys from various regions of North and East Syria arriving periodically. So far, five convoys have come from the Euphrates Canton, four from the regions of Tabqa, Raqqa, and Deir ez-Zor, and 11 from Jazira Canton.

 25 Martyrs and Over 240 Injured in the Resistance at the Dam

 The Turkish occupation forces have committed multiple massacres against civilians heading to Tishrin Dam, resulting in the deaths of 24 citizens, including well-known figures such as artist Jumaa Khalil (Bavi Tayar), politician Muzaffar Ramadan, women's activist Muneja Haidar, athlete Kevo Othman, and journalist Akid Roj, in addition to medical personnel, students, and youth movement members.

 25 Martyrs

 January 8, 2025: The first civilian convoy heading to Tishrin Dam was attacked, resulting in the martyrdom of Zozan Hamo, Karam Ahmed Al-Shihab Al-Hamad, Azad Farhan Mohammed Hassan, Mustafa Abdi, Othman Ibrahim, and Ali Abbas Shasho.

 January 15: Turkish shelling targeted civilians on duty at Tishrin Dam, leading to the martyrdom of paramedic Omar Hassan, the married couple Adham Mustafa Ali and Heza Mohammed, Othman Ibrahim, and student Roniz Mohammed Ali.

 January 16: Citizen Mohammed Qasmo was martyred in a Turkish attack on a civilian convoy.

 January 17: Turkish forces attacked another civilian convoy, resulting in the martyrdom of paramedic Maher Jafar Muhmeid and Mohammed Hassou.

 January 18: In an attack on those guarding the dam, martyrs included Akram Shekhos Hussein Rakho, athlete Kevo Othman, co-chair of the Democratic Union Party office in Qamishli Muneja Haidar, Qamishli City Council members Muzaffar Ramadan Mohammed and Abdul Qader Ibrahim, and Kurdish theater artist (Bavi Tayar) Jumaa Ibrahim Khalil.

 January 21: In an attack on civilians at Tishrin Dam, Hazna Abdi and Mohieddin Hussein Omar were martyred.

 January 22: In another attack on the dam, citizen Mohammed Shafiq Ismail was martyred.

 January 25: The Turkish occupation army shelled protesters at the dam, leading to the martyrdom of young man Mohammed Khalil Hamo.

 January 26: A Turkish drone bombed civilians protesting at Tishrin Dam, injuring over 34 people.

 February 15: A drone strike targeted protesters at the dam, leading to the martyrdom of journalist Akid Roj, who was covering the protests.

 240 Injured

 In addition to the 25 martyrs, more than 240 civilians have been injured in ongoing attacks on protesters, including eight journalists. Among the injured are the co-chair of the Education Authority in North and East Syria, Samira Haj Ali, and the deputy co-chair of the Executive Council in Jazira, Hamrin Ali.

 Kilo Issa, the member of the Central Committee of the Kurdish Democratic Party in Syria, stated that the people of North and East Syria have been heading to Tishrin Dam for two months to protect their water and land from Turkish occupation attacks and its mercenaries. He said, "Protecting the dam is everyone's responsibility."

 Issa, who participated in the resistance at the dam, mentioned that he was part of the third convoy and that the experience was deeply painful. He stated, "When we arrived at the dam, the Turkish occupation forces attacked us twice with drones, resulting in the injury and martyrdom of around 25 people."

 He described the resistance at Tishrin Dam as "an unprecedented historical resistance that will leave its mark on history. The resistance will continue until victory is achieved."
